This slide goes along with the theme of AMSA’s recent Board Meeting, Raising the Bar, referring to how we see the bars increasing through the first months of the year.
This chart also compares 2006 to 2009, for different shipment segments. You can see that for the first six months of the year, National Account and COD shipments are way down from 2006, while GSA and military shipments are down much less. Interline, or 409 shipments are up, as more military companies shift to using “managed carriers” where the shipment is booked with one carrier but hauled by one of the van lines participating in our data study – that’s where we get this info.

New home sales are another area where we are finally starting to see some signs of improvement after a number of years of decline. These bars show quarterly sales of New Homes in 2007, 2008 and 2009. In the second quarter of 2009, we are finally seeing upward movement, which hopefully indicates that we have passed the bottom and started the recovery.

This chart also looks at New Home Sales (in blue), along with sales of Existing Homes (in red). The data is separated by Region of the country. In the first area, we see strong improvement in the second quarter of the year in the Northeast for both New and Existing Home Sales. The second group shows a very large increase in New Home sales in the Midwest, with almost no increase in Existing Home Sales. The South shows little growth in either area, while the West has strong growth in New Homes, but a decrease in sales of Existing Homes.

And we have some good news in the fuel cost sector. Diesel fuel prices are down significantly from last year, with the blue line representing diesel prices last year and the red line showing this year’s prices. Obviously the cost of fuel is a significant part of movers’ expenses, so it is always good news to see costs decrease.

You can learn more about many of these areas by subscribing to AMSA’s exciting new data product, Industry Trends, which is a quarterly report produced by our staff that reports on a variety of data of interest to the moving and storage industry. We combine industry data with data from outside sources to educate readers.
