Setting Goals for the New Year

by THERESA MUELLER-RODAKS, Nelson Westerberg

Happy New Year! I hope everyone has had the opportunity to take the time to step back and appreciate what is important to you personally. I am grateful for the much-needed time I was able to take off from the office with remaining vacation days left. This gave me the opportunity to reflect on the past year, the current time, and start planning for the next year.

Usually, I will set goals for myself, most of them not the most rewarding or challenging, but baby steps as I always referred to them. This year, I needed to do things differently and set goals for personal and professional growth. Professionally, I needed to add goals outside of what the company has placed for me within my review. With many things being virtual, communication via email, office space being remote; I find it perfect timing to make it a point daily to connect on the phone and engage with others; to have a solid conversation with a follow up email after, to be seen. I want to spend time working with my team other than a brief email answering a question. Going over different scenarios, possibilities, the what if's, seeing if there is any knowledge that can be shared with them or gained by myself. To fully prepare the team with resources, support, training, and any necessary tools to do their daily work.

To lead a strong, successful team; you need to know the strengths and weaknesses of each individual and focus on both of those traits. Removing the silo’s, more group meetings/gatherings, more one on one conversations, commitment to build the team to the best of their ability, connect and relate to other departments within the organization as this will benefit all.

I’ve taken on new responsibilities in the last year within our company. This allows me to work with different teams within our company and also gives the opportunity to get teams from different avenues working together. To not only hand off the baton, but know why this happens, how it happens, and where it goes from there.

This creates excitement and focus which gives a lot of motivation and builds moral. Personal goals of course were exciting, more difficult to create but I need to remember to work hard but to take time away from work as well. Take advantage of vacation time and not wait until the end of year to use 2 1/2 weeks. Mentally disconnect from work, take calls outside of office hours but remember to resolve the issue at hand and go back to what was previously taking place. Family is very important, mental health is so often over looked; balance is key. Success and rewarding outcomes are part of my personal goals with family and friends. Closure where needed.

I wish everyone the best of health and the most happiest New Year! Best of luck as you navigate through every day!
